The Secret

The other day I watched the movie “The Secret” again.

It’s about the connection between our thoughts/feelings/beliefs and our experiences in the world. Or the link between the internal (spiritual) and the external (material) world.

If you don’t know the movie yet, here’s the first 20 minutes on youtube.

Power versus Force – David R. Hawkins

A great book about the levels of consciousness!

“Level of consciousness” means a way of thinking, a mental attitude, a way to look at the world and oneself.

The higher someone’s level of consciousness, the more this person understands about the world and the more he sees the world as it really is. It also means: the higher the consciousness the happier and peaceful the person is.

To step up one level someone must have a specific insight or aha-moment. By doing this, a problem that was persistent before is now solved and the person sees the world in a different light. Hawkins talks about 17 Steps and divides them basically in three main levels which I’m describing below.

What to Say to Start a Conversation?

Here are a few ideas what you can say to start a conversation. There are three possibilities:

Say or ask something about the environment

  • The place you are in
  • The event that is happening now
  • The weather, for instance if it just starts to rain or snow or the thunder or if it’s very cold or hot
  • The shop: the stuff you can buy here
  • The bar or club: The music or the band that is playing

Book Recommendations

Sometimes people ask about books I recommend.

Here’s my list.

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins

That was an interesting but not too easy read about evolution. Here are some exciting details…

How Did Life Come Into Existence?

There was water, carbon dioxide, methane, and ammoniac on earth. By adding energy from the sun and thunder storms, more complicated molecules like amino acid were formed. Those are the building blocks of proteins. Coincidental at one point in time some remarkable molecules came to existence. They had the ability to copy themselves: Replicators. I imagine this copying process like this: A replicator attracts other molecules until two identical replicators are next to each other. Then they part. Of course this process isn’t perfect so mistakes occur during copying.

Red Queen by Matt Ridley

I just finished this fascinating book about evolution and sex. Matt Ridley examines what happened to humans and animals during evolution. And he has some amazing answers. Check it out!

To be in a “red queen race” means that you have to run, evolve, and become better just to stay where you are in comparison to the others. It’s about sexual selection and survival of the own species. (see also wikipedia)

Why Do Humans Have Sex?

There are beings that do simple cell division to reproduce. So why do we have sex? The answer is astounding: To be resistant against parasites, like bacteria that live within us. They change their genetic code all the time and they live during several generations while there is only one human generation. They adapt to the human. As a result of sex the genes of a man and a woman get combined to a new genetic code. The offspring now is immune against the parasites. It’s a red queen race.

Steve Pavlina: Personal Development for Smart People

Klicke hier für die deutsche Version.

Steve Pavlina is writing a very successful blog since 2004. He is engaged in different aspects of personal development and was looking for coherence and general principles in personal growth. In his recently published book he presents a very smooth and elegant result.

I really liked the book. It showed me many new and stronger perspectives about life. In this post I would like to share some of them with you.

You can find a sample chapter one of the book in pdf here.

Part I

In the first part Steve Pavlina describes his seven fundamental principles of personal development.

The core principles:

Truth
We primarily grow as human beings by discovering new truths about ourselves and our reality. First we have to face the truth and accept it as it is. We cannot solve problems if we don’t admit they are there.
